تتطلب معايير الإبلاغ الأوروبية للاستدامة من كل منشأة إجراء تقييم أهمية نسبية مزدوج قبل تحديد معايير الموضوع المراد الإبلاغ عنها. تحدد الفقرات 20 إلى 33 من ESRS 1 هذه العملية. تقيّم المنشأة كل مسألة استدامة من زاويتين: هل تخلق آثاراً فعلية أو محتملة على الأشخاص والبيئة (الأهمية النسبية للأثر، وفقاً للفقرات 43-44 من ESRS 1)، وهل تولّد مخاطر أو فرصاً تؤثر على الوضع المالي للمنشأة أو أداءها أو تدفقاتها النقدية (الأهمية النسبية المالية، وفقاً للفقرات 49-50 من ESRS 1). إذا كان موضوع ما ذا أهمية نسبية من أي بُعد، تقوم المنشأة بالإبلاغ عنه.
